With a degree in Marine Biology by the University of Méditerranée Aix -Marseille II in France, I have always been interested in the study of marine mammals. In 2003 I had the chance to study sea lions in La Paz, Mexico and later on, during the development of my Master’s thesis in collaboration with the University of Florida and the USGS Sirenia Project, I visited Florida to work on a project addressing the population genetics of Florida manatees. I continued to work with manatee populations in Mexico during my Doctoral studies, focusing on aspects such as genetic diversity, population structure, identification and pedigree analysis. I had the opportunity to participate on various field work trip to capture manatee for health assessment in Florida, Puerto Rico, Belize and Mexico. While working for GEOMARE I have been invited to train biologist and veterinarian to sampling technique during manatee capture in Brazil and I am a member of the IUCN Sirenian Mesoamerica specialist group.
I joined CIBIO-InBIO in August 2013, where I continue to pursue my research interests, which comprise the use of molecular biology and genetics to generate new data that would be otherwise unavailable to improve knowledge and conservation of species. I am also interested on genetics or more general projects to gather information to protect endangered species, particularly marine mammals and manatees. Currently, I am collaborating on population genetic and transcriptome projects involving amphibians, Bosca´s newt and Rhinella marina toad, developing genomic projects on manatee and in charge of a manatee presence project in Mexico which is executed by a bachelor student.
