CIBIO-InBIO RESEARCHERS PARTICIPATED IN TPDL 2018 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

Together with João Aguiar Castro, a PhD researcher from INESC TEC, Ângela Lomba organized the Workshop “Multi-domain Research Data Management: from metadata collection to data deposit”, under the scope of TPDL 2018 Conference, held in Faculty of Engineering - University of Porto.

According to Ângela, “this workshop aimed to encourage researchers to share their data management experience with experts, to deal with practical issues in research data management and to provide a hands-on experience with recently developed tools to organize and describe research data and their metadata”.

In this context, CIBIO-InBIO researcher Rui Figueira presented the session “One billion biodiversity occurrence records published through GBIF: path and challenges on data sharing”, in which he addressed the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) as an example of data sharing platform.

The GBIF Portuguese node’s coordinator revealed that the GBIF “has recently surpassed the one thousand million records of species occurrences available worldwide, resulting from a collective effort of more than 1200 institutions, and of more than a million researchers and citizen scientists worldwide”. He reinforced that “the adoption and endorsement of a common framework on biodiversity informatics by GBIF and other key global partners have been crucial to these results”.

At the end of the workshop “a multidisciplinary overview of the major challenges and difficulties in research data organization and description was composed”, Ângela Lomba said. This is, according to her, “essential to define future research and development priorities and contribute to common standards and guidelines to support research data management, metadata creation and data sharing”.
