ECOPOTENTIAL PROJECT WAS FEATURED AT THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT

The science-policy briefing event “Science for Post 2020 Environmental Targets – Insights from Earth Observation of Protected Areas” highlighted the most relevant findings of the ECOPOTENTIAL project, which supports the use of Earth Observation in Protected Areas across Europe and beyond.

These key findings included the Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês (PNPG) storyline developed by CIBIO-InBIO group ECOCHANGE, in particular how satellite products can be good predictors of habitat suitability for iconic plant species in the PNPG, such as Iris boissieri and Taxus baccata.

The post-2020 environmental strategies, based on the perspectives on future biodiversity frameworks and targets, were also presented. According to the project leaders, ECOPOTENTIAL is a key project in the EuroGEOSS strategy (Europe's part of the Global Earth Observation System of Systems), and its methodology can be expanded to other Protected Areas. However more resources for training Park managers on Earth Observations are needed.
