CIBIO-InBIO RESEARCH ON ANCIENT DOGS WAS HIGHLIGHTED BY NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC

In the article recently published by the scientific journal Quaternary International (special issue on African Archaeozoology), an international team, coordinated by CIBIO-InBIO researchers Ana Elisabete Pires and Catarina Ginja, presents a study of Iberian and Maghreb Roman dogs.

Through morphological, archaeological and paleontological data, researchers concluded that, in the past, the extent of dog’s morphological variation is most evident in Roman times, with the presence of different genetic lineages. That period is believed to mark the beginning of the morphological differentiation seen in extant dog breeds of Western Mediterranean.

National Geographic special edition “Dogs and Cats” referred to this study in a text about the history of dog and cat ancestors’ domestication and their expression in the archaeological record and in the history of art.
