Celebration of Charles Darwin’s Anniversary

Since 2012, in collaboration with various organizations (APBE, Porto’s Botanical Garden, ESE-Porto, CMP and the Science Museum of the University of Coimbra), CIBIO-InBIO has been celebrating Darwin’s Day, by organizing several activities intended for students, teachers and the general public.

Practical activities open to the general public that took place on February 12, 2012 at Ribeira.

Natural selection in action –hands-on activities about natural selection and its effects in species features.

Practical activities open to the general public that took place on February 12, 2012 at Porto's Botanical Garden.

The Evolution Games – a set of hands-on activities about natural selection and genetic drift and their effects in our daily lives.

The Gardens of Evolution – guided tours to the Botanical Garden to observe plant species which allow us to learn more about evolution and its mechanisms.

Guided tours and practical activities open to elementary schools that took place on February 12, 2015 at the Gardens of the Crystal Palace.

Conference "The applications and implications of evolution in our daily life" - a seminar focused on the impacts of evolution in our daily life, by CIBIO-InBIO researcher Xana Sá Pinto that took place on February 12th, 2015 at Escola Secundária Aurélia de Sousa.

Coimbra
Presentation of the book "Um livro sobre evolução", edited by Rita Campos with the participation of CIBIO-InBIO members and other evolutionary biologists and pre-university students from Portugal and Mexico, at the High School Infanta D. Maria and at the Science Museum of the University of Coimbra. These events took place on February 12, 2014 at 14h30 and 17h00, respectively.

 

Darwin's Legacy in Porto 2015
Practical activities open to the general public, took place on February 12, 2015 at the the Gardens of the Crystal Palace.

Eco-Arts Exhibition - an exhibition of crafts by primary to secondary school students form Porto.

Conference "The War of the Sexes" - a seminar focused on sexual selection, by CIBIO-INBIO researcher Nuno Monteiro.

Story telling - introducing young children to the concept of evolution using stories.

Speed dating with evolutionary biologists - relaxed conservations with CIBIO-InBIO researchers, in which one can get to know more about the work of those who strive to understand evolution.

Natural selection and conservation – hands-on activity about natural selection and how it impacts species conservation.

 

Darwin's Day in Coimbra 2015
In February, the program "Um dia sobre evolução" celebrated the Darwin Day with four activities:

Workshop on traditional typography - compose a poster of the last words of Darwin's book "On the origin of species" using traditional typographic methods. This event took place on February 7, 2015 and was open to all audiences. Click here for more information.

Storytelling - Harriet, the tortoise, tells you about Charles Darwin and his legacy. This event took place on February 12, 2015 at 10h00 and was intended for children aged 3-5 years old. Click here for more information.

Seminar "Architecture according to Charles Darwin" - Mauro Costa, architect and professor at the University of Coimbra, spoke about the application of Darwin's theory of natural selection in architecture and related fields. This event took place on February 12, 2015 at 14h30 and was intended for all public. Click here for more information.

Didactic workshop - hands-on activity about sexual selection took place on February 14, 2015 at 15h00 and intended for children aged 5-7 years old. Click here for more information.

 

Darwin's Legacy Celebration in Porto 2016
Several activities open to the general public took place on February 12, 2016 at the Gardens of the Crystal Palace:

"Birthday Gifts for Darwin” Exhibition - an exhibition of birthday gifts for Darwin crafted by students from Porto’s schools. The exhibition was held from the 12th to the 22nd of February at the beautiful Gardens of the Crystal Palace.

Conference "Exploring Darwin’s Ideas: variation under domestication” - a seminar by CIBIO-InBIO researcher Catarina Ginja, focusing on Darwin’s ideas about domestication, exploring genetics and zooarchaeology, which took place at 11:15h.

Speed dating with evolutionary biologists - relaxed conservations with CIBIO-InBIO researchers, in which one can get to know more about the work of those who strive to understand evolution. This year, the speed dating session took place at 10h30.

 

Darwin's Day in Coimbra 2016
On February 12, Darwin Day was celebrated amongst kindergarten children, who were invited to explore Darwin’s legacy in a story telling session "Darwin and the Origin of Species: a great idea in a great book”.
