After completing my undergraduate at the University of Lisbon I went on to do a PhD at the University of Manchester. The main focus of my PhD was transposable element insertion patterns in the role model Drosophila melanogaster. My PhD exposed me to several programing languages including MySQL and R, to the analysis of next generation sequencing (ngs) data from short reads (454 and Illumina) and long reads (PacBio) and genomic analysis of Drosophila melanogaster in search of potential transposable element target sites.
Later on I have analysed data from different bioinformatic fields such as plasmid analysis and visualization as well as metagenomics analysis in food, plants and environmental samples. In addition I have also analyzed SNP mouse data that compared healthy vs. cancer specimens. More recently I have been involved in the development of software for novo assembly of short-read RNA-Seq data though an FCT project here at CIBIO. I joined the PlantEvol group in November 2022.
