120 PARTICIPANTS FROM 12 DIFFERENT COUNTRIES ATTENDED THE XX CRYPTOGAMIC BOTANY SYMPOSIUM

The Cryptogamic Botany Symposium is a bi-annual meeting of researchers and students covering all aspects of mycology, phycology, lichenology, bryology and pteridology.

Running on its 20th edition, this year the event was co-organized CIBIO-InBIO (Predictive Ecology Group) and CIIMAR, and took place in Porto, on July 22-25, 2015.

During the three intensive days of the event, the participants had the chance to engage in fruitful scientific discussions about key aspects pertaining to the taxonomic groups that determined the topic of each scientific session (algae, bryophytes, lichens and pteridophytes). They also enjoyed of abundant social interaction during a very appealing social programme, which included, among other activities, a trip to Douro’s wine region. The adoption of three official languages – Portuguese, English and Castellan - allowed for an efficient communication between the 120 participants who attended the event coming from 12 different countries.

Amongst these 120 participants, 53 were university students, who did not miss out on the opportunity to attend the presentations of their choice from a total of 128 communications, focusing on biodiversity and conservation (71), bioindicators and environmental management (31), evolution and biogeography (21), and technology and heritage (6).
