A Research Fellowship (BI) (Reference BIOPOLIS 2022-77) on the scope of the project SELINA – name: Science for Evidence-based and sustainabLe decIsions about NAtural capital, grant agreement No 101060415, funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme (Topic: HORIZON-CL6-2021-BIODIV-01-07), at CIBIO/Associação BIOPOLIS to developed work on ecosystem services accounting in Northern Portugal. The work tasks will focus on organising and harmonizing data, evaluating changes in the extent and the condition of ecosystems, measuring ecosystem services, and linking this information to environmental determinants and socioeconomic values. The BI holder will further support reporting activities and collaborate in the dissemination of
project results.

Main research field: Environmental Sciences (or related scientific fields).

Admission requirements: Candidates with a Master's degree in scientific fields compatible with the function, preferably with basic training in Environmental Sciences or related fields, attending a doctoral program in the area of Biological Sciences and with previous experience in ecosystem services.
Candidates with:
i) experience in research activities in the field of studies on ecosystem services;
ii) experience of living in in addressing drivers of ecosystem change;
iii) previous participation in basic or applied research projects;
iv) fluency in Portuguese and English (spoken and written);
v) authorship in scientific publications relevant to the topic;
vi) good communication skills.

The candidate should be able to work well within a team and to possess troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

The candidate must present a scientific curriculum compatible with the work plan.

Working plan: Within the scope of the work, the following tasks will be developed:
- Collect and harmonize available data to evaluate ecosystem extent and condition;
- Gather complementary information to model or assess the supply of ecosystem services;
- Analyze and map drivers of environmental change (incl. wildfires);
- Account for changes in ecosystem services supply associated to drivers of change;
- Support reporting activities and result dissemination;
- Attend project meetings;
- Scientific articles writing.

Work Place:
The work will primarily be carried out at the CIBIO-InBIO pole of Vairão, Vila do Conde. Working periods in partner Research Institutions may take place.

Duration of the fellowship: 6 months, eventually renewable for an additional period of 6 months.

Monthly stipend: Monthly stipend is €1.144,64 according to the stipends established by FCT, I.P. in Portugal (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/docs/Tabela_de_Valores_SMM_2022.pdf). Payment will be made by bank transfer on a monthly basis. The successful candidate will also be entitled to the reimbursement of Social Security payments (Seguro Social Voluntário) and work insurance.

Expect starting date: 1st of January 2023

Selection criteria: Assessment will be made in accordance with admission requirements (see above) and will be based on:
a) the relevance of previous experience (60%);
b) the quality of the curriculum vitae (30%);
c) the analysis of a motivation letter (10%).

The jury may not award the fellowship if the quality of the candidates is inferior to that intended.

In the case of admitted candidates whose evaluation does not differ more than 10% from that obtained by the best positioned candidate, the jury will interview these candidates. This will be aimed at obtaining clarifications about the curricular elements and additional information, as well as to evaluate the attitude profile and motivation of the candidate. The final score of each jury member is obtained by the following assessment: 90% scientific and curricular career evaluation and 10% interview.

Jury composition:
The Jury will be chaired by Ana Sofia Vaz (CIBIO), having as effective members Joana R. Vicente (CIBIO) and João P. Honrado (CIBIO/FCUP).

Publicity and communication of results: The ranking of applications will be published at a visible and public area of Institution facilities, and all candidates will be informed by email about the result of their application.
