WILD THINGS IN WILD PLACES: AN UPDATE ON THE SAHARA CONSERVATION FUND’S WORK IN THE TERMIT & TIN TOUMMA NATIONAL NATURE RESERVE

Dr. Thomas Rabeil will speak about the work that SCF is doing to secure a future for some of the most critically endangered Sahelo-Saharan wildlife in Niger. The SCF and in particular Dr. Rabeil has played a fundamental role in establishing the largest protected area in all of Africa in 2012: Niger’s Termit & Tin Toumma National Nature Reserve. Dr. Rabeil will update us on the work going on there today, the challenges ahead for conservation in this remote and harsh environment, and the opportunities he sees for us to make a real difference in the protection of an entire suite of desert species like the addax; dama and dorcas gazelles; Barbary sheep; desert cheetah; fennec, pale and Rüppell’s foxes; sand and African wild cats; striped hyena; Nubian and Sudan bustards; sulcata tortoise; Rüppell’s griffon, and lappet-faced vultures.

Dr. Thomas Rabeil is a Regional Program Officer at the Sahara Conservation Fund (SCF) in Africa since 2006. He is also an international consultant for UNESCO in Africa (Senegal, Kenya and Central African Republic) and for a GEF project in Mexico, and a specialist of protected area management and wildlife monitoring.
