POPULATION GENETICS AS A TOOL IN STUDIES OF EVOLUTION AND CONSERVATION

POPULATION GENETICS AS A TOOL IN STUDIES OF EVOLUTION AND CONSERVATION

With the rapid developments in molecular biology (especially genomics), genetic markers are increasingly used as an indispensable tool in diverse studies in ecology, evolutionary biology, and conservation. Statistical methodologies based on population genetics theory have been developed to extract information from genetic marker data to understand the demographic and evolutionary processes at different spatial and time scales. In this talk, I will focus on marker-based estimation of effective population size and the reconstruction of pedigrees. Applications of these analyses to conservation of endangered species will also be discussed briefly.

Dr. Jinliang Wang is a senior research fellow at the Institute of Zoology, Zoological Society of London, visiting CIBIO-InBIO at the invitation of the BIODIV PhD students. His research focus on developing population/quantitative genetics models and methods on analysis of empiral data to address issues in evolutionary and conservation biology and improvement of domesticated species.
