NEW CHALLENGES OF PHYLOGEOGRAPHIC STUDIES IN THE GENOMIC ERA: THE IBERIAN SEMI-DECIDUOUS OAKS (Quercus L.) AS A CASE STUDY

STUDENT SEMINAR IN BIODIVERSITY AND EVOLUTION

 

 

In this seminar I will review some phylogeographic challenges posed by species comprising the Quercus genera. Previous work have shown complex phylogeographic structure of white oaks in the Iberian Peninsula with systematic hybridization and introgression events coupled with different expansion patterns from Southern refugia at the end of the last glacial period. Here I review my previous work with the subsection Galliferae in the Iberian Peninsula that includes many unresolved taxonomic questions. The advent of NGS tools to address unresolved phylogeographic issues offer us a great opportunity to solve long lasting evolutionary questions.

 

Carlos Vila-Viçosa is a geobotanist specialised in Vegetation Ecology with a main focus on phylogeography. He studied Biological Science in Évora University where he got his Master degree in Conservation and Management of Natural Resources. He joined CIBIO-InBIO in 2014 as a PhD student of the BIODIV program and he integrated into PRECOL and PLANTBIO research groups.
