MUSEUM TECHNIQUES IN THE 21st CENTURY (BIRDS AND MAMMALS)

 

This course aims to:

  • describe the value of museums in the 21st century;
  • present the ways that ‘voucher specimens’ of birds and mammals are prepared (that follow long-standing traditions);
  • discuss state-of-the-art ‘whole specimen’ techniques including Cornell specialities such as CT scanning and sound recording;
  • consider how museum specimens provide genetic and genomic resources.

 

 

PROGRAMME

 

DAY 1. April 23, 2018

09.30 - 12.30 | Value of museums in the 21st century and current methods for preparing specimens, followed by discussion

14.30 - 17.30 | Practical session preparing voucher specimens

 

DAY 2. April 24, 2018
09.30 - 12.30 | Museum specimens as a genetic and genomic resource, followed by discussion
14.30 - 17.30 | Practical session preparing voucher specimens

INTENDED AUDIENCE

The course will be open to a maximum number of 15 participants.
Priority will be given to:

  • 1st year and other PhD students attending the BIODIV Doctoral Program;
  • PhD students attending other courses;
  • Other post-graduate students and researchers.

 

REGISTRATION

 

Registration Deadline: March 30, 2018

 

Participation is free of charge for BIODIV students | 50 € (students) / 100 € (other participants). CIBIO-InBIO members will have an additional discount of 20%. Does not include lunch nor coffee breaks.
To apply, please send an e-mail accompanied by your short CV (max. two A4 pages) to post.graduation@cibio.up.pt. Please refer your academic status (PhD student, MSc Student, Other) and the institution to which you are affiliated. BIODIV students should also mention which year of their PhD they are in. If you are interested in more than one course, you need to send a separate application for each of them.
