LINGUISTIC CREOLIZATION

Tjerk Hagemeijer (Center of Linguistics of the University of Lisbon (CLUL)) will present a seminar entitled "Linguistic creolization" on 20th of January, at 14.30, in Campus Agrário de Vairão auditorium.

Since the 19th century, the parallels between languages and biological species have received considerable attention. In this line of thought, so-called creole languages can be seen as the result of speciation resulting from language contact. Using the Portuguese-related Gulf of Guinea creoles as a test-case, this talk focuses on the process of hybridization whereby creole languages come into being and addresses their controversial phylogenetic status.

Tjerk Hagemeijer's main research interests concern the origin and evolution of creole languages. He is currently leading an interdisciplinary project on the creole societies in the Gulf of Guinea which includes the contribution of human population genetics, in a partnership with CIBIO.

Right after, at 15.45, Bruno Maia Carvalho will present the Student Seminar on “Analysis of the historical factors that shaped the biological diversification of the Western Mediterranean Basin: a genomic study of midwife toads (Alytes spp.) using multiple molecular markers". Bruno is a PhD student supervised by Nuno Ferrand de Almeida and Helena Gonçalves.
