Information session: From benefits to numbers: what is the impact of trees in the City?

The Municipality of Porto acknowledges and values the importance of the city’s urban grove, focusing every effort at hand on the improvement of its real functions in a space which is common to all of us.

Promoting these functions and services demands not only thinking and working the urban forest in regards to its planning, management and preservation, but also in what concerns raising the population’s awareness about the worth of this heritage, as well as its singularities and shortcomings.

Prompting a balanced bond between the Tree and the Citizen will inevitably be underpinned by an enhanced perception of the real benefits that urban groves provide, many of which have already been quantified by using available tool kits like i-Tree.

With the purpose of fostering the discussion and reflection about this topic, the Municipality of Porto in collaboration with CIBIO-InBIO will be hosting an information session scheduled to take place on December 1, 2015 at 14:00 in the Auditorium of Almeida Garrett Municipal Library.

The session "From benefits to numbers: what is the impact of trees in the City?” will include two talks by invited speakers Dr. David Nowak, and Landscape Architect. Marisa Graça. Dr. Nowak is a prominent North-American researcher who has authored countless works on the impact of vegetation in urban health and quality of life. He is also the main coordinator of the i-Tree tool kit. Marisa is currently a researcher at CIBIO-InBIO’s LPDM Group, who is pursuing her PhD studies at the University of Porto.
