COMPARATIVE STUDIES OF THE DEFENSIVE APPARATUS OF SCORPIONS

Scorpions are most known for their emblematic pincers and venomous stinger. Among the 2000+ species of scorpions, there is a lot of variability in the relative size and the shape of these structures. We found evidence that indicates that these morphological differences actually enable differences in performance. I will also briefly review our other activities.
Arie van der Meijden obtained his MSc at the University of Wageningen, and his PhD at the University of Konstanz. He has worked on the biomechanics and functional morphology of scorpions at CIBIO-InBIO since 2009.
