Movement Ecology

From 20 Feb 2024 until 23 Feb 2024 - BIOPOLIS-CIBIO, Vairão, Portugal (Face-to-face)
Movement Ecology
This course aims at providing theory and practical approaches for the study of animal movement and behaviour, both in the marine and terrestrial environments. We will provide theoretical background on foraging and migration theory and introduce students to the state-of-the-art technology used in the study of animal ecology and behaviour. Importantly, we will focus on how animal movement can be integrated with environmental information to gain a better understanding of animal behaviour and ecology. Invited international researchers will be presenting cutting-edge research and bring the latest findings and methodologies to the table. Lastly, the course will provide practical exercises or case studies, allowing students to apply their theoretical knowledge and gain hands-on experience in analysing animal movement data.

PROGRAM
Introduction to movement ecology
Biologging and technological tracking solutions for terrestrial and marine animals
Foraging and migration theory
Integrating high resolution environmental information derived from satellites in movement ecology
Combining GPS and Accelerometer data to study breeding phenology
Behaviour studies using accelerometer data
Case studies with different technologies covering concepts and data analysis of animal movement, followed by practical sessions
Case studies on shark, bird and mammal movement ecology
