ADVANCED COURSE: MUSEUM TECHNIQUES IN THE 21ST CENTURY (BIRDS AND MAMMALS)

This course aims to:

  • describe the value of museums in the 21st century;
  • present the ways that ‘voucher specimens’ of birds and mammals are prepared (that follow long-standing traditions);
  • discuss state-of-the-art ‘whole specimen’ techniques including Cornell specialities such as CT scanning and sound recording;
  • consider how museum specimens provide genetic and genomic resources.

 

 

PROGRAMME

 

DAY 1. February 15, 2017

09.30 - 12.30 | Value of museums in the 21st century and current methods for preparing specimens, followed by discussion

14.30 - 17.30 | Practical session preparing voucher specimens

 

DAY 2. February 16, 2017

INTENDED AUDIENCE

The course will be open to a maximum number of 15 participants.
Priority will be given to:

  • 1st year and other PhD students attending the BIODIV Doctoral Program;
  • PhD students attending other courses;
  • Other post-graduate students and researchers.

Participation is free of charge for BIODIV students and InBIO researchers* | 50 € (students) / 100 € (other participants). Does not include lunch nor coffee breaks.
