Microbiology and Infectious Diseases - M&ID

Group Description

The group promotes integrated research activities focusing on microbes and infectious agents that affect domestic animals, wildlife and humans. Moreover, research is conducted to unravel microbes and disease dynamics between domestic and wildlife animals and men. Focus is on research of new agents and as a follow-up of previous works, particularly on Prothoteca, Mycoplasma, Parvovirus, Coronavirus, Distemper virus, Adenovirus, Calicivirus, human hepatitis viruses and others. Companion animals and wildlife are also be the target for studies on Bornaviruses that can affect both animals and humans. The group is also committed with the study of environmental and food microbes (mainly algae, bacteria and viruses), which include the detection of human enteric pathogens, through the surveillance and molecular epidemiology of animal pathogens with zoonotic potential. Research will address pathogenic, molecular and epidemiological aspects.

The characterization of microbiota associated with wild fauna, some of which on the brink of extinction and inhabiting remote areas, will be also subject of our focus. We will assess the occurrence of antibiotic resistance determinants in unexamined ecological niches, in order to establish the role of wild animals and remote areas as reservoirs and/or sources of antibiotic resistance determinants. Group members have specific national collaborations with field institutions and research groups (IPATIMUP, UTAD, Centro Hospitalar e Universitário de Coimbra), as well as with international research institutions (Cornell Univesrity Collin Parrish Lab, Uppsala SVE, Prof. Buzinni Lab, Italy, Faculdade de Veterinária UEM-MZ, Centro de Biotecnologia da UEM- MZ, CITSC) among others.
