I am mainly interested in studying plant speciation patterns by integrating different approaches such as taxonomy, biogeography, phylogenetics, and population genetics. My taxonomical research has been mostly focused on the Andean genus Calceolaria (Calceolariaceae), on its distribution and species limits. More recently I have been working on island biogeography, on the factors influencing the diversification process of insular taxa, using the evolution of Micromeria (Lamiaceae) in the Canary Islands as an example. I am interested in the role that island's geological history, inter-island colonization and hybrid zone dynamics play in insular radiations. Currently, my work focuses on the applications of DNA metabarcoding in combination with high-throughput sequencing.

Pamela completed her undergraduate studies in Ecology at La Molina National Agrarian University in Lima, Peru, and obtained a masters degree in Plant Systematics at the University of Missouri-St. Louis in the United States of America before moving to Portugal in 2008. She completed her PhD in Biodiversity, Genetics and Evolution at the University of Porto in 2015. and is currently working for the Environmental Metagenomics Project at CIBIO/InBio since 2016.
