Evolutionary processes operating in marine life on remote archipelagos such as the Azores constitute my main interest of research, as they are often overlooked. Currently I am interested in unravelling the mode of evolution of marine invertebrate taxa remote oceanic islands, by applying population genetics and phylogeographic approaches to selected gastropods and bryozoan species naturally occurring in the northeast Atlantic Ocean, with contrasting types of larval development. By integrating knowledge from several sources (genetics, oceanography, paleontology, geology, and ecology), I hope to enlighten the diversity and biogeographical patterns observed in marine invertebrates, clarify the evolution of life in remote islands and understand the role of seamounts, ocean-currents and periodic climatic changes in the long-distance dispersal/invasion process of the archipelago. Moreover, I am interested in the bryozoan tree of life, particularly in the relationships within the family Phidoloporidae worldwide. With a special emphasis on Azorean taxa, namely those in seamounts, a better understanding of the (paleo)biogeographical patterns and processes that have produced the Azorean marine fauna and general dynamics in the North Atlantic can be achieved.

I hold a BSc in Genetics and Biotechnology since 2015 and completed my MSc in Biodiversity, Genetics and Evolution in 2017. I started my PhD in October 2018, with a project entitled "The genetic structure in populations of marine organisms in remote islands: a study of bryozoans and gastropods in the Azores (NE Atlantic Ocean)", under the supervision of Sérgio Ávila, António M. Santos, and Manuel Curto.
