My main scientific area is Plant molecular and functional biology, with emphasis on the plant response to both biotic and abiotic stresses. Most of this work has been conducted in the forest species Pinus pinaster (maritime pine) and the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. Here are some highlights:

Plant Sumoylation
Sumoylation is a key protein post-translational modification mechanism that is strongly induced during stress imposition, but lacks extensive functional characterization in plants. We are uncovering new roles for SUMO pathway components using loss- and gain-of function mutants in Arabidopsis.

Reactive Oxygens Species
ROS have been consistently implicated in the response to plant pathogens as well the maintenance of homeostasis in the face of environmental stimuli. We have been studying the ROS homeostatic network, for instance, during the maritime pine response to both salt stress and the necrotroph Botrytis cinerea

Transcriptomics and Gene Regulatory Networks
Part of our work involves transcriptomics studies using microarrays and RNAseq. We seek to establish transcriptional and gene regulatory networks that help support our functional data. Recently, we have been addressing the transcriptional response to drought in the Portuguese species-of-interest Quercus suber (Sobreiro).
