I graduated in Biochemistry by the Faculty of Sciences, University of Porto, in 2011.Currently, I work as a technician in the Infectious Diseases Laboratory (Teaching and research support) at ICBAS-UP (since 1998), University of Porto, and I am a PhD student in Veterinary Sciences at ICBAS-UP, University of Porto, in the field of Virology (positive single-stranded RNA viruses) since 2011.
The origin, evolutionary history, diversity and virus-host interactions involving wild/domestic animals and man are the main interests of my research.
For my PhD project I am studying the genomic integration of Hepatitis C virus (HCV) fragments in the European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) and hare (Lepus europaeus). I have demonstrated that endogenous HCV homolog fragments are present in the European rabbit and hare genomes and that the detected fragments are infectious and replicate in bovine cell culture systems. Other approach in my studies will focus in the development of an efficient in vitro cell culture system for HCV wild type infection and replication.
Besides my PhD work I am also involved in the rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV) research among others.
