I have a degree in Marine Biology and a MSc in Insular Biodiversity and Ecology. Since 2009 I have been working in Freshwater Ecosystems within the areas of Phycology and Limnology and these are my major areas of interest. Insular ecosystems are also one of my interests, because islands are great places to study the diversity, composition and organization of biological communities and can be used as natural laboratories.

I worked for the Azorean Freshwater Ecology Research Group, at the University of the Azores, characterizing phytoplankton and phytobenthos communities of Azorean lakes and streams, determining the indicative value of microalgae for ecological quality assessment of these ecosystems, notably the trophic state and water quality. I also worked in paleolimnological projects based on fossilized diatoms in sediments of lakes, in order to develop transfer functions for water quality variables that allow characterizing the historical evolution of these ecosystems and their conditions in the absence of human impact.

Currently, I’m working in the project "EU-CIBIO: Biodiversity and Climate Change" at the Rui Nabeiro Biodiversity Chair at University of Évora.
