Variation is a core concept in modern biology: without it evolution simply could not occur. Recently I found out about the enormous amount of variation generally displayed by wall lizards and I got fascinated with it. So, currently I’m studying morphologic and genetic variation in wall lizards of the Iberian Peninsula.

I intend to measure asymmetry levels in two wall lizard species (Podarcis bocagei and Podarcis carbonelli) in order to evaluate possible environment and/or genetic effects in their developmental stability. I would like to explore how their development is disturbed in populations occurring in sympatry, in polluted areas and also in limit areas of their distribution range. From another perspective, I also plan to evaluate genetic variability in populations of P. hispanica type II with mitochondrial and nuclear markers aiming to uncover possible cryptic genetic variation within this morphotype. These approaches will allow us to enhance our knowledge about these common but important elements of the Iberian herpetofauna and ultimately contribute to implementation of appropriate conservation actions.

I hope to continue my research focusing the dynamic interaction between phenotype and genotype, integrating different approaches and establishing collaborations with other researchers with common interests.
