Post-doctoral Research Fellowship | Natural sciences
Referência: ICETA 2020-22

Job: Post-doctoral Research Fellowship

Main research field: Natural sciences

Sub research field: Environmental sciences

Job description:

A Post-doctoral Research Fellowship (BPD) (Reference ICETA 2020-22) in the project PCIF/MOG/0083/2017, entitled “FirESmart - Nature-based solutions for preventive fire management and sustained supply of ecosystem services” is available at CIBIO, through ICETA, Instituto de Ciências, Tecnologias e Agrárias e Agroambiente da Universidade do Porto, funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. (FCT/MCTES).

Eligibility Requirements:

The prospective candidates must hold a PhD in Biology, Environmental or Forest sciences, or similar scientific area in the Natural Sciences. They should also demonstrate previous experience in modelling landscape dynamics, fire-landscape interactions or ecosystem services from an ecological and/or socioeconomic viewpoint in a scientific or professional context. Proficiency in written and spoken Portuguese and English is preferable. The candidates must have obtained a doctoral degree in the previous three years to the date of submission of the application.

Work Plan:

The FirESmart project aims to maximize fire mitigation while ensuring biodiversity protection and the delivery of ecosystem services, by exploring alternative fire and land-use management options under climate change and land abandonment scenarios.

The activities related to this fellowship include modelling fire-vegetation dynamics and assessing tradeoffs between fire suppression and ecosystem services from both biophysical and economic viewpoints (i.e. cost/benefit analyses) under landscape management and climate change scenarios; organizing specific meeting and workshops with firefighters, managers or other local stakeholders in the Transboundary Biosphere Reserves ‘Gerês-Xurés’ and ‘Meseta Iberica’; scientific writing of papers and reports.

Applicable Legislation:

Law nº.40/2004, 18th August (Research Fellow Statute) amended and republished by Decreto-Lei n.º 202/2012, 27th August; FCT Regulation for Research Studentships and Fellowships.

Work Place:

The work will be conducted at CIBIO/InBIO, UP – Centro de Investigação em Biodiversidade e Recursos Genéticos, Universidade do Porto, Campus de Vairão, Rua Padre Armando Quintas, 7, 4485-661 Vairão, under the supervision of Dr. Adrián Regos. Short stays at the other participant institutions and field work in the two Transboundary Biosphere Reserves may be required.

Duration of the fellowship:

The fellowship will have duration of 6 months, potentially renewable for an additional period of 6 months, starting on September 1st 2020.

Monthly stipend:

Monthly stipend is €1600 according to the stipends established by FCT, I.P. in Portugal (http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores). Payment will be made by bank transfer on a monthly basis. The successful candidate will also be entitled to the reimbursement of Social Security payments (Seguro Social Voluntário) and work insurance.

Selection criteria:

The jury panel will select the best candidate, from those meeting the eligibility requirements above, based on his/her merit, through the analysis of:

- Overall appreciation of the Curriculum Vitae (50%), namely:

(a) adequacy of the academic background to the specific topic of the call (15%);

(b) demonstrated knowledge of fire and landscape ecology, ecosystem modelling, GIS and remote sensing (15%);

(c) demonstrated experience in landscape dynamics modelling, ecosystem services modelling, computational analysis and programming in R environment (10%);

(d) demonstrated experience of communication of scientific results, especially in the form of manuscripts (10%).

-Previous experience in R&D projects (30%):

(a) experience of application of theory and methods of landscape or fire ecology, fire-landscape modelling and ecosystem services assessment (20%);

(b) overall scientific experience (10%).

-Motivation letter (20%).

If considered justifiable by the jury, the best candidates (up to 5) from the provisional ranking (70%) will be invited for an interview (30%), in person or by videoconference, to establish the final ranking. If the candidates do not fulfil the required quality standards the jury might decide not to award the fellowship.

The jury may not award the fellowship if the candidates’ CVs are not aligned with the qualifications desired.

Jury composition:

Adrián Regos, João P. Honrado, Ângela Lomba. Substitute member: Joao Gonçalves.

Publicity and communication of results:

The ranking of applications will be published at a visible and public area of ICETA facilities, and all candidates will be informed by email about the result of their application.

a) Curriculum vitae (including academic training and professional career, a publication list, other relevant information in the context of the project research goals, email address and copies of certificates of academic degrees);

b) Motivation letter (including a brief description of research experience, why the candidate is suitable for the announced position, and whether he/she might be interested in continuing to work on this scientific field in the future).
