Link to the call

A Research Fellowship – MSc holder is now open for applications ICETA through CIBIO-InBIO (Reference ICETA 2019-90) in the context of the Project “GreenRehab - Green rehabilitation system for burned soils based on the inoculation of native cyanobacteria and microalgae” (PCIF/RPG/0077/2017) supported by national funds through FCT/MCTES.

Scientific areas: Biological sciences, Environmental sciences

Keywords: fire ecology, remote sensing, statistical modeling, vegetation ecology

Admission requirements:

Candidates will be admitted to the tender when:

(i) holding a M.Sc. degree in Biological Sciences, Environmental Sciences, or related fields;

(ii) demonstrating previous experience of research in fire ecology;

(iii) demonstrating previous experience of using Earth observation products and remote sensing methods; and

(iv) demonstrating previous experience of international dissemination of scientific results.

Project overview and workplan:

The GreenRehab project aims to test a novel approach to active management of burnt areas through soil inoculation of primary producers. The grant holder will support the activities related with the assessment of post-fire ecosystem recovery in burnt areas submitted to inoculation compared to control sites. The workplan will include the following activities:

(i) establishment of a statistical experimental design for post-fire recovery assessment;

(ii) establishment of a baseline status for vegetation cover and composition through field surveys in inoculated and control sites;

(iii) collection and processing of UAV imagery from inoculated and control sites; (iv) extraction and comparison of indicators of post-fire vegetation recovery in inoculated and control sites; and

(iv) support to scientific dissemination of project results, namely through manuscripts for international journals and communications at scientific meetings.

Legislation framework:

A fellowship contract will be celebrated according to the regulations defined by FCT “Regulations for Advanced Training and Qualification of Human Resources”, in accordance with Law 40/2004, of 18 August, as amended and republished by Decree-Law No. 202/2012 of 27 August, and as amended by Decree-Law No. 233/2012 of 29 October and by Law No. 12/2013, of 29 January, and Decree-Law No. 89/2013 of 9 July, to Fellowships Regulation of FCT (www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/docs/RegulamentoBolsasFCT2018.pdf), and to Fellowships Regulation of ICETA approved by FCT.

Work place:

The work will be conducted at CIBIO-InBIO, UP – Centro de Investigação em Biodiversidade e Recursos Genéticos, Universidade do Porto, Campus de Vairão, Rua Padre Armando Quintas, 7, 4485-661 Vairão, under the scientific supervision of Prof. João Honrado. Field work will be conducted in the field sites of the project (Centre Portugal).

Fellowship:

The fellowship will have a duration of 6 months, extendable to a maximum of 15 months, and is due to start in October 1, 2019.

Salary:

Monthly stipend is €989,70 according to the stipends established by FCT, I.P. in Portugal (http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores). Payment will be made by bank transfer on a monthly basis. The successful candidate will also be entitled to the reimbursement of Social Security payments (Seguro Social Voluntário) and will benefit from a work insurance.

Selection criteria:

The jury panel will produce a ranking of candidates based on their merit, through the analysis of:

- Overall appreciation of the Curriculum Vitae (50%), namely: (a) adequacy of the academic background to the specific topic of the call (10%); (b) demonstrated experience of research in fire ecology (15%); (c) demonstrated experience with Earth observation products and remote sensing methods (15%); and (d) demonstrated experience of international communication of scientific results, especially in the form of papers in peer-reviewed journals (10%).

- Experience in specific topics of the tender (30%), namely: (a) experience of research in post-fire ecosystem recovery (10%); (b) experience with statistical methods and tools applied to sampling design and inference (10%); and (c) experience of field surveys of vegetation or ecosystem attributes (10%).

-Motivation letter (20%);

If considered justifiable by the jury, the best candidates (up to 3) will be invited for an interview, in person or by videoconference, to establish the final ranking. The final ranking is obtained by the following assessment: 70% scientific and curricular career evaluation and 30% interview. If the candidates do not fulfil the required quality standards the jury might decide not to award the fellowship.

Composition of the Selection Jury:

João Honrado (president of the selection jury), João Gonçalves (vowel), Joaquim Alonso (vowel) and Adrián Regos (substitute vowel).
