Reference: Iceta 2019-88

Link to the call

A call is open to award a post-doctoral fellowship (Reference ICETA 2019-88) to collaborate in applied ecology projects at CIBIO-InBIO, through ICETA - Instituto de Ciências, Tecnologias e Agroambiente da Universidade do Porto.

Main research field: Natural and Environmental Sciences

Sub research field: Environment and Global Change (Environmental Modeling and Assessment)

Eligibility Requirements:

Candidates will be accepted to the tender when:

(i) holding a PhD in Geographic Engineering, Geomatics, Biological Sciences, Environmental Sciences or Forest Sciences, or similar scientific area in the Natural Sciences or Engineering; and

(ii) demonstrating previous research experience with remote sensing or with statistical modeling of biodiversity.

Work Plan:

The work plan aims to provide detailed distribution maps of invasive species, as well as their spatiotemporal evolution, in mainland Portugal. The fellowship holder will explore multiple optical remote sensing platforms, from site-level with UAV/UAS systems up to landscape-level with satellite platforms. The work plan will include pre-validation of existing occurrence records, as well as fieldwork to acquire additional records along with UAV surveys. Lab-based work will focus on image processing workflows, satellite data analysis and classification, and statistical modeling of species distributions.

Applicable Legislation:

The grant is awarded under the Research Fellowship Holder Statute, approved by Law nº 40/2004, of August 18th, and the Regulation for Studentships and Fellowships of the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P.: http://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/docs/RegulamentoBolsasFCT2018.pdf.

Work Place:

The work will be conducted at CIBIO/InBIO, UP – Centro de Investigação em Biodiversidade e Recursos Genéticos, Universidade do Porto, Campus de Vairão, Rua Padre Armando Quintas, 7, 4485-661 Vairão, under the supervision of Dr. João Gonçalves, Dr. Joana Vicente and Dr. João Honrado. Short stays at partner institutions may be necessary, and field work will be conducted in mainland Portugal.

Duration of the fellowship:

The fellowship will have duration of 6 months, potentially renewable for additional 6 months, starting on October 1st, 2019.

Monthly stipend:

Monthly stipend is 1 509,80 € according to the stipends established by FCT, I.P. in Portugal (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores.phtml.pt). Payment will be made by bank transfer on a monthly basis. The fellowship holder will also be entitled to the reimbursement of Social Security payments (“Seguro Social Voluntário”) and work insurance.

Selection criteria:

The jury panel will select the best candidate, from those meeting the eligibility requirements above, based on his/her merit, through the analysis of:

- Curriculum Vitae (75%), namely:

a) Proficiency and autonomy in the use of GIS, Remote Sensing and/or photogrammetry software for processing and analysing imagery from satellite and UAV platforms (30%);

b) Experience with statistical and spatial analyses in the R language/environment, especially for biodiversity or ecosystem modeling (25%);

c) Previous research or professional experience in invasion ecology (10%);

d) Experience of communication of scientific results, especially in the form of scientific manuscripts and reports (10%).

- Motivation letter (25%).

If considered justifiable by the jury, the best candidates (up to 5) from the provisional ranking (70%) will be invited for an interview (30%), in person or by videoconference, to establish the final ranking. If the candidates do not fulfil the required quality standards the jury might decide not to award the fellowship.

The jury may not award the fellowship if the candidates’ CVs are not aligned with the qualifications desired to develop the work plan or if the foreseeable funding conditions are not confirmed.

Jury composition:

João Gonçalves (president), Joana Vicente (vowel), João Honrado (vowel), Adrián Regos (substitute vowel).

Publicity and communication of results:

The ranking of applications will be published at a visible and public area of ICETA facilities, and all candidates will be informed by email about the result of their application.

Application:

The call for applications is open between 24/08/2019 and 07/09/2019 (24:00 GMT). Applications should be submitted in Portuguese or English by email to bolsas@iceta.up.pt with the fellowship reference in the subject area (Reference ICETA 2019-88), and the following documents attached:

a) Curriculum vitae (including academic training and professional career, a publication list, other relevant information in the context of the project research goals, email address and copies of certificates of academic degrees);

b) Motivation letter (including a brief description of research experience, why the candidate is suitable for the announced position, and whether he/she might be interested in continuing to work on this scientific field in the future).
