Scientif area: Biological Sciences

A post-doctoral fellowship is now open for applications at ICETA through CIBIO-InBIO (Reference ICETA 2018-93) funded by the REN Biodiversity Chair, in the field of power line impacts on birds, under the following conditions

Admission requirements:

The post-doctoral fellowship is suitable for candidates holding a PhD degree in biology or ecology. The candidates should preferentially have a strong background in bird ecology, impact assessment of power lines and wind farms, and proven skills in Portuguese language (both written and oral).

Work overview/Workplan

The candidate will integrate the REN Biodiversity Chair team, working on a diversity of issues related to the biodiversity impacts of power lines, and will be supervised by the Chair holder, Francisco Moreira. The work will include data collection, statistical analysis and scientific paper writing. Tasks to undertake include:

(i) a review of existing reports made available by the Portuguese energy transmission system operator (REN) on bird mortality in power line monitoring programs. Data to be extracted include carcass detectability, removal and exclusion effects, which will then be analyzed for scientific purposes;

(ii) analysis of causes of power outages in REN power lines, including building a spatially explicit predictive model on the drivers of outages (including the role of wildlife);

(iii) field work for monitoring population dynamics, capturing and tagging little bustards and white storks in Southern Portugal, species that have been studied in previous years;

(iv) participation in several activities related to the Biodiversity Chair interaction with REN, including drafting a biodiversity action plan and identifying possible technological developments for impact monitoring and mitigation.

Legislation framework: A fellowship contract will be celebrated according to the regulations defined by FCT “Regulations for Advanced Training and Qualification of Human Resources”, in accordance with Law 40/2004, of 18 August, as amended and republished by Decree-Law No. 202/2012 of 27 August, and as amended by Decree-Law No. 233/2012 of 29 October and by Law No. 12/2013, of 29 January, and Decree-Law No. 89/2013 of 9 July, to Fellowships Regulation of FCT (www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/docs/RegulamentoBolsasFCT2015.pdf), and to Fellowships Regulation of ICETA approved by FCT.
