CLIMATE CHANGE AND MARINE BIODIVERSITY
Study led by CIBIO-InBIO researchers, which indicates that climate change may have different impacts on the evolution of marine versus terrestrial species, has been attracting media attention.
 

In an article published by the prestigious journal Biological Reviews, an international team led by CIBIO-InBIO researchers, Sérgio Ávila, Carlos Melo, Ricardo Cordeiro e Lara Baptista presents a new predictive model to study marine island biogeography. The model explains that the impact of past climatic changes, and the resulting sea level fluctuations, on the evolution of marine and terrestrial species might have been different.

 

The paper, now highlighted by the media, is an important contribution to better understand the evolution of marine life on volcanic oceanic islands. It integrates, for the first time, historical and ecological biogeography of marine ecosystems with patterns of past glacial–interglacial cycles. It also can help to better predict the impact of current climatic change on marine biodiversity.
