Microorganisms and food: the good, the bad and the ugly

A Junior University Summer Project

Microorganisms and food: the good, the bad and the ugly is a laboratory-based summer project that seeks to promote the approach of various topics related to the area of food microbiology.

This one-week long project, implemented in the scope of Porto’s Junior University, comprised a set of hands-on activities for high school students (14-17 years old) focusing on food microbiology topics. Participant students were invited to work at a laboratory and engage in activities that include, for instance, the evaluation of the microbiological quality of different foods, by investigating the presence of microorganisms.

The project is promoted by the Faculty of Sciences and coordinated by Fernando Tavares (FCUP and CIBIO-InBIO), Maria João Fonseca (CIBIO-InBIO) and Cristina Dias (CIBIO-InBIO).
