The book summarizes the framework and major results from a research project devoted to dissect the origin and evolution of winter colour polymorphism in species of weasels and hares conducted in CIBIO. It was written in a form accessible to the non-specialist public, also encouraging its use as an educational resource. It includes a short narrative about the research, some broad definitions and additional information, two educational activities and suggestions for other resources.

The edition of the book was funded by portuguese Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), in the scope of project "2CHANGE – To Change or not to Change? The genetic basis and evolution of seasonal coat colour polymorphism” (PTDC/BIA-EVL/28124/2017), co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund through COMPETE2020 (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-028124).
