Sustainable Human-Wildlife Coexistence

With this project in Sustainable Human-Wildlife Coexistence we aim at using state of the art scientific approaches to: i) document mammalian wildlife biodiversity across south Angola; ii) quantify, characterize remnant populations of the most threatened and iconic species, and provide the scientific basis for their recovery; iii) understand human-wildlife dynamics and their implications for conservation and for promoting rural communities’ livelihoods while fostering a sustained coexistence between humans and nature.
We intend to further expand the work already being developed by CIBIO in the provinces of Huíla (Bicuar National Park) and Cuando Cubango (Cuatir Private Reserve) using a combination of state-of-the-art research methods and analytical tools such as remotely triggered camera-trapping, noninvasive genetic monitoring and metabarcoding, and GPS tracking of animal movements to obtain a deeper understanding of where, how and why biodiversity is structured in south Angola. Further, working with local communities, we will grasp perceptions about domestic animals’ predation and risk to human safety as well as intensity and motivation for wildlife hunting. Ultimately, we intend to contribute with empirical knowledge to guide national and local planning aimed at maximizing landscapes of coexistence and mitigating human-wildlife conflicts, while promoting the training of aspiring wildlife researchers in Angola, and empowering local communities to sustainably exploit natural resources, hence promoting resilient societies dependent on functional ecosystems.
To achieve these goals, we propose to structure a work plan on two work packages (WPs):
WP1: Promoting Biodiversity – Wildlife community, dynamics and recovery
WP2: Human-wildlife interactions – drivers, dynamics and consequences
