My work involves the study of different genes acting on the immune response. Besides the primary defense represented by chemical and surface barriers, the immune response involves the recognition of pathogens and the assembly of a specialized response.

My PhD was focused on the rabbit as an animal model to study HIV-1 infection, with emphasis on the rabbit SERINC3 and SERINC5 as restriction factors for HIV-1 replication and the need for the human CD4/CCR5 receptor complex for viral infection.

Currently I am working on rabbit IgA. IgA is the most abundant antibody produced by mammals and it has an important role in the protection of mucosal barriers, representing a line of defense that establishes an important communication between the innate and the adaptive immune system. Whilst other mammals have one or two IgA subclasses, fifteen IgA subclasses have been identified in the European rabbit, despite the apparent loss of the main IgA receptor. Therefore, I am working on the characterization of the different rabbit IgA subclasses and the pursue of possible molecules that serve as IgA receptors in the rabbit.
