I am a Biology student with an interest on the relationships between human culture and genetic variation. Presently, I am collaborating in a multidisciplinary project on the origins of the creole societies from the Gulf of Guinea islands (São Tomé, Príncipe and Annobón).
Specifically, I am trying to identify genetic lineages that may be used to trace the African provenance of the slaves that originally peopled the island of Príncipe. According to the available linguistic data, these slaves provided the most relevant African contribution to Lung’Ie, an endangered creole language, exclusive of Príncipe, that is currently spoken only by a minority of the inhabitants of the island.
