Born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1946. Biologist by the Lisbon University in 1971.
Academic carrier at the Lisbon University (Faculty of Sciences) from 1970 to 1989 – Ph.D. in 1983; Aggregation in 1987. From 1990 Research carrier at the Tropical Research Institute (IICT); from 1995 on (after public acts) head Researcher; retired in the July 2014, though proceeding his research activity in the unity of Zoology of the IICT, the former Centro de Zoologia.

Research in Entomology, mainly in taxonomy, distribution, zoogeography and phylogeny. More than 200 contributions published in reviews, books and books chapters; frequently, is invited as "referee” for a number of international reviews of the specialty.
Described ca. 215 species and subspecies, 57 genera and subgenera, 8 subfamilies and one family of insects new to Science belonging to the Orders Microcoryphia, Zygentoma and, with/in collaboration, Phthiraptera (Mallophaga) and Lepidoptera (Papilionoidea and Saturnoidea).
One genus of Microcoryphia and eleven species (of Diplura, Microcoryphia, Zygentoma, Dermaptera, Phthiraptera (Mallophaga), Coleoptera, Strepsiptera and Diptera) received his name.
Integrated Ph.D., Aggregation and other tribunals, in Portugal and Spain.
Participate in zoological missions to Madeira (Madeira, Porto Santo, Desertas and Salvages), Azores (Santa Maria Island), Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé e Príncipe, Angola, and Macau, and coordinated part of them. Field work developed also along continental Portugal and in many other temperate and tropical countries.
Participated in several national and international congresses where communications were always presented; in part of them included the organizing and/or the scientific committee and was often invited as chairman. Was, further, the scientific commissioner of entomological exhibitions performed in Portugal.
