Liliana Santos Silva graduated in Biochemistry from the University of Porto. In 2008, she joined Dr. Helena Carvalho’s laboratory where she started to study the distinct protein posttranslational modifications modulating glutamine synthetase (GS) in Medicago truncatula. On July 2017, she successfully defended her Ph.D. dissertation, entitled "Regulation of GS by reactive nitrogen species in Medicago truncatula”. Those studies contributed not only to elucidate the molecular details of the NO-mediated regulation of the distinct GS isoenzymes of M. truncatula but also to gain insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying the signaling role of NO in root nodules.

Currently, after a short period deepening her knowledge in microbiology, she is investigating the role of GS-like proteins in the N-sensing/ N-signaling network underlying the formation of root-derived lateral organs in her favorite model legume.
