João Gonçalo graduated in Biology from the University of Porto in 2016. In tthat year he co-created the VACALOURA.pt project and traveled to the Bavarian Forest National Park, Germany to do an internship regarding sustainable forest management and deadwood ecology. He also has a MSc degree in Ecology and Environmental Management from the University of Lisbon, with his dissertation entitled "How important are big trees for biodiversity? A call to the local comunity of Lousada".

João's main interest are focused on small natural features that support and conserve a wide range of species and ecosystems services, providing key resources to populations as well as regulatory processes that influence large areas, such has deadwood and large trees. He works with citizen science, community engagement and valorisation mechanisms in order to promote its conservation. He's PhD thesis will focus on remote sensing techniques to inventor this small natural features.
