Elisa Margarida Carvalho Gomes da Maio
Research Technician
In 2009, I completed the Integrated Masters Degree in Veterinary Medicine at University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD). Throughout my academic and professional life, I experienced vast field and laboratory work concerning a wide range of wildlife species (lagomorphs, ungulates, cetaceans, wild carnivores) and diseases, in particular paratuberculosis, bovine tuberculosis and brucellosis. In 2014, I joined the Research Centre in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources, CIBIO-InBIO, working as research technician and field veterinarian in two projects:
- ”SOS European rabbit: Basis for the conservation of a keystone species in the Iberian ecosystems” - studying Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease in wild rabbits and monitoring of rabbit populations;
- ”Monitoring of Iberian Lynx reintroductions in Guadiana Valley” - through intervention in emergency situations, contribution to health status, physiological and genetic monitoring of reintroduced animals and their offspring, and monitoring of reintroduced Lynxes using telemetry (radiotracking, GPS-GSM), camera trapping and non-invasive information.
My research interests include Veterinary Scienses, Infectious Diseases and Biodiversity & Conservation, particularly animal health, wildife diseases, disesases shared between wildlife and domestic animals, zoonosis, field epidemiology, molecular epidemiology, disease ecology, endangered species.
