My networks

My academic background is on Mathematics, holding three degrees by the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto: BSc in Mathematics – Educational branch, MSc in Mathematics – Foundations and Applications, and PhD in Applied Mathematics.

My interest focuses on mathematical applications to biology and on the development and application of software for mathematical modeling, simulation and data analysis.

Indeed, in the past few years I developed software and mathematical models in the fields of neuroscience and population genetics. I developed mathematical models to assess how short term memories could be temporarily stored. Computational simulations were used to highlight key features of neuronal morphology and/or ion channel densities that could be used to store new information and to assess how the single neuron properties can be combined in a network to obtain robust and efficient memory system. On the other hand, I developed computer applications in the field of population genetics focused on the simulation of genetic profiles to evaluate kinship likelihoods and on the processing and treatment of genomic information to identify DNA segments that underlie phenotypic differences.
