My interest on plant sciences originated from my Integrated Master in Pharmaceutical Sciences, a degree focused on human health and its numerous disciplines including pharmacology, biology, chemistry, microbiology, virology among others. However, the topic that was most interesting to me was the enormous potential of plants in human society.

As such, I joined a Master in Functional Biology and Plant Biotechnology in which I developed a thesis in which I carried out very successfully at the PlantBio group at BIOPOLIS-CIBIO, on grapevine genomics. It encompassed extraction of DNA from more than 300 individual samples, optimization of protocols, NGS sequencing, and most importantly, the characterization of the genome of Portuguese varieties using multiple bioinformatics tools and strategies.

I am currently pursuing a PhD degree, which is a continuation of the project started within the scope of my masters in Functional Biology and Biotechnology of Plants, an I’m conducting a research project in grapevine that uses multi-omics and bioinformatics, in a combined effort of the PlantBio group at BIOPOLIS-CIBIO (Univ. Porto) and the Globe Institute from the University of Copenhagen. The main objective of my work is the characterization of the grapevine microbiome using shotgun metagenomic sequencing; by performing DNA extraction and preparation of sequencing libraries for Novaseq, Miseq and BGISeq platform; followed by designing and implementing a Bioinformatic analysis in Linux and R environment for genomic and metagenomic exploration of leaf, rhizosphere and soil microbiome. Within the scope of this project, I was awarded an EMBO Scientific Exchange Grant for 3 months in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen.

I’m also an enthusiast organizer of scientific events, being responsible for 2 international conferences on Data Science, "DSPT Day 2019” and "DSPT Day 2020”, as well as 2 conferences on Biological Sciences, "BioDiv Annual Meeting 2021” and "BioDiv Annual Meeting 2022”.
