Cátia Alves has a Biology Bachelor’s Degree (2016) and Marine Ecology Master’s Degree (2019) from Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon. After presenting the masters dissertation on Marine Litter, she worked in environmental education at Oceanário de Lisboa, did an internship in Marine Biology at St Abbs Marine Station (Scotland) and integrated a research team from the Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre (MARE).
Throughout her work, she has been involved with science communication, habitat mapping and Echinodermata fisheries assessment and ecology studies. Her main interests are Environmental Education, Scientific Diving, Ecosystems Restoration and Marine Biogeography.
She currently is a PhD student in the project "Marine Biogeography Functional Patterns and Processes in Atlantic Archipelagos”, where her goal is to study the diversity and population structure of three shallow-water crustacean decapod crab species, to clarify their evolution in remote oceanic islands and to understand the possible role of seamounts, ocean-currents and periodic climatic changes in the long-distance dispersal/invasion process of the archipelagos.
