THE WORK OF JOÃO MESSIAS, MARTA SOARES AND COLLEAGUES ON THE ROLE OF SEROTONIN IN THE MODULATION OF COOPERATIVE BEHAVIOR HAS MADE THE COVER OF THE LATEST ISSUE OF THE JOURNAL BEHAVIORAL ECOLOGY

The image of an Indo-Pacific Bluestreak cleaner wrasse (Labroides dimiditus) inspecting the mouth of a Malabar grouper (Epinephelus malabaricus) that appears in the front cover of the latest issue of the journal Behavioral Ecology highlights the study developed by CIBIO-InBIO researchers João Messias and Marta Soares on the modulatory role of serotonin in cooperation between unrelated individuals.

In the article “The role of serotonin in the modulation of cooperative behavior”, the researchers demonstrate that this hormone is a driver of cooperative behaviors on wild cleaner wrasses. By showing that modifications in the activity of serotonin lead to changes on social and cooperative activities, they provide a contribution to the understanding of neural pathways of cooperation, giving the first steps towards our ability to grasp what makes animals cooperate with each other.

The lovely photo that features on the cover of the journal was taken by João Messias at Cod Hole dive site, Great Barrier Reef, Australia.
