THE UNIVERSITY OF CAPE VERDE (UniCV) HOSTS IN PRAIA, SANTIAGO, THE PRESENTATION OF THE BOOK “THE NATURAL HISTORY OF THE DESERTAS ISLANDS”
The presentation event took place at Uni-CV’s Rectorate Auditorium at Praia and counted with the presence of the President of the Cape Verdean Zoological Society, the Minister of Science and the Dean of UniCV. This book, co-edited by the two hosts and by Cornelis J. Hazevoet, from the University of Lisbon (former IICT), focuses on the biodiversity of Desertas Islands’ Santa Luzia, Branco and Raso, containing 10 illustrated chapters with vast scientific information validated by 19 internationally recognized experts.
This book constitutes a scientifically accurate bilingual tool (in Portuguese and English) raising awareness about the natural patrimony of these islands that are included in a biodiversity hotspot. The project that gave rise to the book was funded by the Global Environmental Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF-SGP) and the National Directorate for the Environment of Cape Verde.
All the profits raised from the book’s selling will revert to fellowships granted by the Cape Verdean Zoology Society to Cape Verdean and European students or researchers who aim to study the biodiversity of these islands.
