THE NATIONAL POPULATION OF LITTLE BUSTARD HAS BEEN HALVED IN THE LAST 10 YEARS

In a paper recently published by the scientific journal PeerJ, an international team which included CIBIO-InBIO researchers João Paulo Silva, Ricardo Martins, Marcello D’Amico and Francisco Moreira showed that the population of little bustard has declined 49% over the last decade, in Portugal.

The team of researchers sought to measure the effectiveness of the European Union network of protected areas in the protection of little bustard. For that, they compared the trends of the population in the period from 2003 to 2006 with those of 2016, in 51 areas - 21 of which within Special Protection Areas (SPA).

The study developed within the scope of the REN Chair in Biodiversity CIBIO-InBIO concluded that the mere designation of SPA in farmland is not enough to secure species populations and has to be combined with agricultural policies and investment to maintain not only habitat availability but also habitat quality.
