THE EVOLUTION OF SCIENCE IN PORTUGAL
On November 08, 2019 the study “A evolução da ciência em Portugal (1987-2016)”, published by Fundação Francisco Manuel dos Santos and coordinated by Nuno Ferrand, CIBIO-InBIO´s director, was launched during the Conference “A atitude científica: o que é ciência e o que não é?”.
The study brings a detailed analysis of the evolution of science in Portugal covering the period between 1987 and 2016 with a special emphasis on the area of marine sciences. The study also compares the Science made in Portugal with other European countries and highlights the differences among the main national higher education institutions and distinct regions of Portugal.
The main results of the study, now highlighted by the media, indicates that although Portugal had a remarkable progress on the amount of financial resources and productivity in the last decades, it is still behind the European countries with solid science systems. This is particularly evident when comparing science productivity with human resources. Nevertheless, Portugal is, today, among the leading European countries in marine science publications.
The study, which also have as authors Ester Serrão, which coordinated the analysis on marine sciences, Elizabeth Vieira, João Mesquita, Jorge Silva, Sylwia Bugla, Joana Torres and Raquel Vasconcelos (CIBIO-InBIO) constitutes a contribution to the debate on public policies and the future of science in Portugal.
