RESEARCH DISCUSSES THE IMPACT OF NEW "SILK ROAD" TO BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION

In an article published by the prestigious journal Nature Sustainability, an international team led by CIBIO-InBIO researchers, Fernando Ascensão and Henrique Pereira, argues that environmental protection should be a priority for the Chinese initiative to promote global trade BRI.

BRI promises to greatly influence the future of global trade and promote the economic development around the world. However, the authors point that it may also promote permanent environmental degradation, due to BRI's economic development corridors coincide with high environmental value areas and can, therefore, have significant impacts on biodiversity.

The article, which now has been highlighted by the media, concluded that the Belt and Road Initiative could be also an opportunity for China to take a leading role in moving global development towards sustainability by requiring its overseas partners at least the same environmental quality China aspires for within its territory.
