REPTILES AND AMPHIBIANS OF THE NATIONAL PARK OF DIAWLING

REPTILES AND AMPHIBIANS OF THE NATIONAL PARK OF DIAWLING

During two field missions to Mauritania in 2010 and 2012, researchers from the BIODESERTS Group at CIBIO-InBIO were able to observe, identify and sample a wide range of reptiles (crocodiles, lizards, snakes) and amphibians (frogs, toads) inhabiting the National Park of Diawling.

By combining field and historical data obtained from Museum collections, the researchers characterized around 15% and 31% of all amphibian and reptiles species currently known in Mauritania. While these provisional estimates are expected to be broaden through additional sampling efforts to be put forth in the near future, these findings present an important contribution to describe and preserve the still scarcely known biodiversity of this region.
