RED DEER IN IBERIA

RED DEER IN IBERIA

In an article published by the journal PLOS ONE, a team led by CIBIO-InBIO researchers João Queirós and Paulo Célio Alves reveals that red deer populations in Iberia results from a divergent evolutionary history, when compared to other European populations.

The article, which has been attracting media attention, suggests that around 27-19 thousand years ago, when the extreme climate conditions associated with glaciations took place, red deer populations persisted not only at south of the Pyrenees, in the Iberian Peninsula, but also at north of the Pyrenees in cryptic refugia. After LGM those populations became isolated and expanded into different directions, being the red deer from the north of Pyrenees the most probable origin of the current Central and Northern European populations. Individuals from the south of Pyrenees became restricted to the Iberia and today constitute a genetically divergent population.

In this study, genetic data, fossils and ecological models where combined to analise the evolutionary history of red deer populations over the last 120 thousand years. It brings a significant contribution to wildlife management and the conservation of the red deer in Iberia.
