RAQUEL VASCONCELOS’ RESEARCH ON THE CABO VERDE GIANT SKINK IN THE SPOTLIGHT AT MONACO CHANNEL

The giant skink Chioninia coctei was endemic to the Cabo Verde Islands, and recorded from the islets Branco and Raso. Unfortunately, this lizard is now extinct and several surveys have failed to rediscover it at the Cabo Verdean islets.
CIBIO-InBIO researcher Raquel Vasconcelos and Aurélien Miralles, from the National Museum of Natural History of Paris, visited the Oceanographic Institute of Monaco in order to study the five conserved specimens of this lizard and choose which one would be offered to Cabo Verde, attracting the attention of the Monaco Channel.
This visit was also the moment to formalize the scientific expedition “Expeditions of Monaco”, which aims to study the reptiles of Branco Islet and hopefully try to rediscover the giant skink. This trip will also explore a poorly studied species, the giant wall gecko Tarentola gigas, also present at the islet.
