PYRENEAN DESMAN IS DISAPPEARING FROM THE NORTHEAST OF PORTUGAL

In an article published by the prestigious journal Animal Conservation, CIBIO-InBIO researchers Lorenzo Quaglietta, Joana Paupério, Filipa Martins, Paulo Célio Alves and Pedro Beja show that Pyrenean desman (Galemys pyrenaicus) is in marked decline in Northeast Portugal, and suggests a reassessment of the species' conservation status, defined as "vulnerable" in 2008.

The article, which now has been highlighted by the media, also emphasize the importance of river conservation, especially of headwater streams in mountainous zones, which seem to function as natural refugia for the species.
